How to use Veeam explorer to restore Microsoft 365 files backed-up to Wasabi?


Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 v7 empowers customers to securely back up Office 365 to on-premises or cloud object storage. Veeam explorer has been validated to be used to browse and restore files backed-up to Wasabi.

1. Pre-requisites

  • Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 v7 installed and licensed.
  • Active Microsoft 365 account with two-step authentication turned On. 
  • Active Wasabi Cloud Storage account.
  • A Microsoft 365 organization backed up to directly to Wasabi object storage using Veeam for Microsoft 365. Refer to Wasabi's documentation to create a backup on Veeam for Microsoft 365


2. Restore Microsoft 365 Items using Veeam Explorer

2.1 From the Organizations tab, click on the organization and then select the backup you want to restore the file from.


2.2 Click on "Explore" and select the the exchange backup you want to browse and restore from. This example shows how to restore exchange state but you can restore SharePoint, OneDrive and Teams state in a similar way.


2.3 Veeam will warn you about charges for reading from object storage. Since Wasabi does not have any fees besides the storage costs, this will not add any additional costs. Click "OK".


2.4 Veeam will open the Veeam explorer window. Click on the organization and select the item to browse and restore. In this example we browse the Microsoft 365 Inbox and restore an email but you can browse and restore other items including Caldendar, Contacts, etc.


2.5 Select the Mail to restore. And click on "Restore Items" then click on "Restore to the Inbox". 


2.6 On the restore wizard, use the default Application ID and click "Next" to continue.


2.7 You will need to provide Veeam access to the Microsoft 365 account. Click on the link for device login and authenticate with Microsoft365.


2.8 Enter the device code for Veeam into the authentication window and click on "Next".


2.9 Sign-in to your Microsoft 365 account.


2.10 Confirm providing Veeam access to your Microsoft 365 account. 


2.11 On the Veeam restore wizard click on Restore. You will see a green check-mark sign confirming authentication to your Microsoft 365 account.


2.12 Once the item is restored, Click "OK" on the confirmation box after the item is successfully restored.
